Do-It-Yourself (DIY)

(Here for the DIY photos?  Scroll down to the bottom of the page, and prepare to get excited!  :) )

ANY_CHARACTER_HERE

Congratulations!  You’re getting married and you’ve chosen The Flowerman’s unique Do-It-Yourself option for your wedding flowers.  We know you’ll enjoy learning how to make your own arrangements, and we trust that you’ll be 100% pleased with the results.  To help you plan and prepare for “the big day,” here’s everything you need to know about your DIY construction party…

ANY_CHARACTER_HERE
SETTING UP YOUR CONSTRUCTION DAY AND TIME:
ANY_CHARACTER_HERE
Once you have paid your 50% reservation deposit, you will be asked what day and time you prefer for flower construction.  We schedule brides to come in for their DIY construction parties on Thursdays and Fridays beginning at 9 AM.  We will do our best to accomodate your preferred day and time, but be aware that brides are scheduled on a first-come, first-serve basis.   Brides who pay their deposits well in advance are more likely to be able to construct their flowers on the days and times of their choosing.  We will do our very best to ensure that you receive the most help possible.  Our Do-It-Yourself coaches help several brides at once, so do not expect to have your own personal “tutor.”  Our coaches rotate around the room, helping each group as needed.  Our head coach will call you approximately three weeks before your wedding to confirm your final construction day and time and to address any last-minute questions you may have.  Please arrive on time for your construction party (not too late OR too early!) to ensure that one of our coaches will be free to welcome you and get your group started.
ANY_CHARACTER_HERE
UPON ARRIVAL:
ANY_CHARACTER_HERE
When you arrive at The Flowerman on the day of your construction party, let an employee know that you have come to work on wedding flowers and give the last name of the bride you are accompanying.  A coach will get you set up at your own table, bring out your floral product, and give you a few initial instructions.  You will be provided with a basket of useful supplies.  Included in this basket, also known as “the wedding package,” will be the following items:
ANY_CHARACTER_HERE
ANY_CHARACTER_HERE
THE WEDDING PACKAGE:
  • Floral Clippers*
  • Ribbon Shears*
  • Floral Tape
  • Floral Wire
  • Boutonniere and Corsage Bags
  • Pearl-head Pins
  • Pens and Permanent Markers*
  • Water Spray Bottle*
  • Boxes for Transport

*These items are not to be removed from The Flowerman.

WE ASK THAT YOU PROVIDE:
(If Working at Our Centerville Location)
ANY_CHARACTER_HERE
Please bring your own ribbon to wrap around the stems of the bouquets.  Three yards of ribbon per bouquet should be enough.  We recommend ribbon that is 1 to 2 inches in width for best results.  We do have a limited selection of ribbon for sale if you forget to bring your own.  Double-sided satin works well for bouquets, or if you prefer, a sheer would work as well.  You will also need to bring one bow (3 to 4 inches in diameter) for each corsage.  We ask that your bows be made ahead of time, as they are time-consuming and our DIY coaches do not teach bow making.  If you don’t know anyone who can put together corsage bows for you ahead of time, our Do-It-Yourself coaches would be happy to make the bows for you with a bit of prior notice and for a small fee.  Please let us know at your consultation if you will need us to help you make your bows.  If you choose to pre-make your own corsage bows, a narrower ribbon (1/2 inch in width or less) typically works the best.  The ribbon can be satin, sheer, wired, metallic… whatever you prefer.  You will need approximately 3 yards of ribbon for each corsage bow.
ANY_CHARACTER_HERE
Also, please remember to bring any additional embellishments, such as rhinestones, bouquet jewels, marbles, stones, decorative leaves, branches, or artificial pieces that you plan on using during the construction of your wedding flowers.   Please note that if you are planning on creating exceptionally large arrangements (using tall branches such as curly willow, for example), you may be asked to hold off on completing the arrangements until arriving at the venue.  Space in our facility and cooler can be limited due to the high volume of weddings we have in one weekend, so please respect the wishes of your DIY coach if she asks you to wait and put the sizable pieces or high-reaching branches into the arrangements at a later time.
ANY_CHARACTER_HERE
You will need to provide your own vases to place your bouquets in for storage and transport.  Please bring one vase per bouquet, and don’t forget your toss bouquet!  These vases can be the ones that you plan on using for the head table at your reception, or if you prefer, they may be any assortment of vases you have on hand.  Keep in mind that your vases need to be in proportion to your bouquets and other flowers and must be able to stand up and balance without tipping over.  For bridal and bridesmaid bouquets, a vase approximately 9 inches high and 4 inches in diameter typically works best.  Your vases will be safe in our coolers.  As you finish your bouquets and arrangements, we will help you box everything up for easy storage and transportation.  If you happen to forget your vases, we do have some available for purchase.  Please understand that we will not let you “borrow” buckets or vases.  This has become too confusing in the past, and often times our items are never paid for or returned.
ANY_CHARACTER_HERE
Finally, you may wish to bring along an extra vase or small bucket in case you have any leftover flowers at the end of your construction time.  If you can, please bring along a newspaper or two so that your vases and bouquets can be properly packaged and secured for transport.
ANY_CHARACTER_HERE
WE ASK THAT YOU PROVIDE:
(If Working at Our Columbus Location)
ANY_CHARACTER_HERE
Our Columbus location is composed in such a way that all of bridal party vases, ribbon to wrap around the stems of your bouquets, and corsage bows are included in your order.  You will be asked to specify which color(s) of ribbon you prefer for your bouquets and corsages when you meet with a consultant for your initial consultation.  The vases included in your order are very practical in nature.  We often refer to these vases as “cooler vases.”  They are the proper size, height, and weight for nearly all wedding bouquets, and you will be allowed to take them with you when you transport your flowers to the wedding.  Many brides still buy their own set of “pretty vases,” however, to set out for display on the head table at the reception.  You are welcome to keep your set of cooler vases after the wedding, however, many brides in the past have returned their cooler vases to The Flowerman so another bride can utilize them for her DIY wedding.
ANY_CHARACTER_HERE
Similarly to our Centerville location, we ask that you remember to bring any additional embellishments (such as rhinestones, bouquet jewels, marbles, stones, decorative leaves, branches, or artificial pieces) that you plan on using during the construction of your wedding flowers.
ANY_CHARACTER_HERE
Finally, you may wish to bring along an extra vase or small bucket in case you have any leftover flowers at the end of your construction time.  Please understand that we will not let you “borrow” our buckets.  This has become too confusing in the past, and often times our items are never paid for or returned.  If you can, please bring along a newspaper or two so that your vases and bouquets can be properly packaged and successfully transported.
ANY_CHARACTER_HERE
FINISHING UP:
ANY_CHARACTER_HERE
If you have any questions or need any additional supplies while you are constructing your flowers, locate a Do-It-Yourself Wedding Coach and she will be glad to assist you.  Also, if you need any extra flower products, you may enter the customer retail cooler and find whatever flowers you need.  We do require that all last-minute items and additional flowers be paid for in full before you begin working with them in the construction area.  If you have an outstanding balance on your wedding order, you will be asked to pay the amount in full before beginning to work with your flowers.  You will be provided with a permanent marker, and a coach will assist you with labeling everything neatly if the product is going to be stored in our cooler.  We have numerous weddings on any given weekend, and we want to keep everything as organized and consolidated as possible.  For this reason, your flowers will not be moved into our cooler until you are entirely finished with your floral construction.  Please do not leave until you have “checked out” with a DIY coach and she has created a wedding checklist for you.  She will also check that your items are packaged appropriately for storage and transit.  We do provide boxes for you to transport your flowers in, but ask that you bring newspaper (2 full newspapers if possible) to pack between your vases.
ANY_CHARACTER_HERE
GROUP PLANNING:
ANY_CHARACTER_HERE
Please expect to find a busy parking lot upon your arrival the day of your construction party.  We ask that you carpool and limit the number of helpers in your group to no more than six (including yourself).  You may park anywhere around the building, but please do not park in any of the spots marked for other businesses.  Also, please try to stay out of the middle of the parking lot as we often have large trucks that travel through.  Be aware that we do not allow children or babies under the age of 12 in the construction area for reasons of safety.  Plan appropriately and hire a babysitter to watch your children if necessary.
ANY_CHARACTER_HERE
It is a good idea to bring a camera to record these moments of your wedding experience.  It is quite amazing to see what you can create with your flowers, and it  is a lot of fun to take before, during, and after photos.
ANY_CHARACTER_HERE
Plan to be on your feet while you are constructing your flowers.  Dress comfortably and keep in mind that our warehouses are not air-conditioned.  At times it does get very warm.  You will be getting a bit messy, so dress appropriately.  We recommend that you wait to get your nails done until after you have finished constructing your flowers since your flowers may be dirty or contain thorns that will mar your manicure.  The average amount of time brides spend making their own wedding flowers is four hours, so please keep this timing in mind as you plan your wedding week appointments.
ANY_CHARACTER_HERE
We do have a water dispenser and an assortment of snacks on site.  Feel free to bring any additional snacks of your own.  If you need to leave for short lunch, you are always welcome to let a DIY coach know where you are going and leave the facility for a quick break.
ANY_CHARACTER_HERE
THAT’S IT!
ANY_CHARACTER_HERE
We look forward to seeing you at The Flowerman!  We hope you are excited about creating your beautiful wedding flowers.  We are certain that your construction party will be a wonderful experience, and all of us here at The Flowerman will do our very best to make the entire day as fun, easy, and memorable as possible.
ANY_CHARACTER_HERE
If any questions should arise before the day of your wedding construction party, please check our online list of FAQ’s for your particular concern or feel free to contact us.  We sincerely appreciate your business!  :)

Rest assured that your Flowerman flowers will always be fresh and of the highest quality.  WE GUARANTEE IT.  100%!  Unlike other companies that simply ship your DIY flowers to you in a box and then wish you an impersonal “Good Luck!,” our staff personally handles and hydrates each of your flowers for you, confirms correct color and quantity, assists with construction, and watches over your completed flowers in our cooler until the day of your wedding.
ANY_CHARACTER_HERE
ANY_CHARACTER_HERE
ANY_CHARACTER_HERE
Buying your DIY flowers from a company other than The Flowerman means you’ll have to unpack all of your flowers from a box by yourself, cut each stem, and hydrate them overnight in a bunch of buckets.  The Flowerman’s Do-It-Yourself option eliminates all of the hassle!  Let us do the hard work for you!  At the beginning of every week, our head flower processor (a fantastic young man named Cole) unpacks, cuts, hydrates, and feeds all of our wedding flowers for the week.
ANY_CHARACTER_HERE
ANY_CHARACTER_HERE

ANY_CHARACTER_HERE
After Cole has processed and hydrated all of the flowers, the counting and “pulling” process begins.  For two whole days, The Flowerman’s pulling team personally checks and carefully counts all of the wedding flowers.  The team separates all of the flowers by bride and labels each bucket  for easy identification.  All of your flowers and supplies will be counted, out on the table, and ready for your scheduled construction party.  All you have to do is walk in and assemble!  It could not be any easier!

Maybe you have another color in mind for your flowers but found out that they’re not grown naturally?  Why not spray your flowers?!  Available for purchase from The Flowerman, floral spray is NOT spray paint, it is a professional tool used by florists to change the natural color of flowers.  Floral spray is waterproof and will not rub off on your clothes.  This particular bride wanted to use giant “eggplant colored” calla lilies, which are not available naturally.  So, floral spray it is!  (Your guests will never know the difference!)

It is really interesting to see all of the different bouquets being made every week by our DIY brides.  Why not incorporate ”pearls” into your bridal bouquet?  Try piercing the middle of your rose with a pearl-head pin, available for FREE with our Do-It-Yourself wedding option!

Berries and freesia add a punch of fun to this bouquet of white hydrangea and champagne roses.

ANY_CHARACTER_HERE
ANY_CHARACTER_HERE
ANY_CHARACTER_HERE

Many brides choose an all-white bouquet for themselves, which is traditionally bridal.  Try incorporating just a touch of green, as this bride did with a few sprigs of Israeli ruscus, to break things up and help set your bouquet apart from your dress.  So pretty!

ANY_CHARACTER_HERE
ANY_CHARACTER_HERE

Stargazer lilies are a popular flower for weddings, chosen for their vibrant color and subtle scent.  This bouquet is very elegant with its stargazer lilies, white oriental lilies, and star-shaped stephanotis with pearl centers.  The aqua ribbon really “pops” and sets the bouquet off nicely!

Don’t forget to give a flower to your mom!  Why not trying making all of the corsages yourself?  It’s easier than you think!  This beautiful pin-on DIY corsage features white spray roses and yellow freesia.

ANY_CHARACTER_HERE
ANY_CHARACTER_HERE

This mother-of-the-bride made her own wrist corsage!  She was so proud.  What a pretty black and white piece… the orchids are so elegant!

ANY_CHARACTER_HERE

This DIY corsage is made from light pink spray roses, white freesia, and white bouvardia.  Very cute!

Making your own boutonnieres is so much easier than you think!  It’s a simple process to learn, and it will save you so much money!

ANY_CHARACTER_HERE
ANY_CHARACTER_HERE
ANY_CHARACTER_HERE

Many brides choose to make the groom’s boutonniere a bit more “special” by incorporating a second smaller flower on the side.  This DIY bout is made from a single yellow rose and a small Viking pomp.

ANY_CHARACTER_HERE
ANY_CHARACTER_HERE
ANY_CHARACTER_HERE

Why not use gerbera daisies for your boutonnieres, such as this hot pink Do-It-Yourself daisy bout?!  So fun and fresh!

ANY_CHARACTER_HERE
ANY_CHARACTER_HERE
ANY_CHARACTER_HERE

This groom’s bout is made from a white daffodil with a yellow trumpet.  The bride provided wired strands of blue beads, which she used as an accent on all of her boutonnieres.

ANY_CHARACTER_HERE
ANY_CHARACTER_HERE
ANY_CHARACTER_HERE

Here’s a look at one of the corresponding groomsmen’s boutonnieres, DIY-made of yellow daffodils and accented with those same blue beads.  One of the men pinned it on his flannel shirt to pose for this picture.  Thanks!

ANY_CHARACTER_HERE
ANY_CHARACTER_HERE
ANY_CHARACTER_HERE

A large percentage of brides opt to use roses for the boutonnieres.  Roses are a good choice because they are easy to use, inexpensive, and hardy.  Plus, they come in SO MANY different colors!

ANY_CHARACTER_HERE
ANY_CHARACTER_HERE
ANY_CHARACTER_HERE

Don’t forget about your ring bearer!  This cute ring bearer’s boutonniere is an ivory spray rose, which was a mini version of the groom’s full-sized ivory rose.

ANY_CHARACTER_HERE
ANY_CHARACTER_HERE
ANY_CHARACTER_HERE

Don’t worry if don’t know what you’re doing… most of the brides who choose our DIY option have never worked with flowers before.  Our wonderful Do-It-Yourself coaches are always there to assist and offer friendly help and advice.  Here one of our DIY coaches, Nikki, shows a bride how to create a corsage.

ANY_CHARACTER_HERE
ANY_CHARACTER_HERE
ANY_CHARACTER_HERE

Overwhelmed?  Just ask for help!  In this picture, another one of our DIY coaches (Sienna… in the gray shirt on the right) lends a helping hand and assists with the construction of a bridal bouquet.  Nearly all of our floral coaches were Do-It-Yourself brides themselves at one point, so they are very understanding of our brides during the DIY construction process.

ANY_CHARACTER_HERE
ANY_CHARACTER_HERE

We’ll show you an example for absolutely everything if you need it.  Here another DIY coach, Melissa, instructs brides on how to wrap ribbon around bouquets.

ANY_CHARACTER_HERE

ANY_CHARACTER_HERE
ANY_CHARACTER_HERE
ANY_CHARACTER_HERE

Completed and in its vase!  Don’t forget that your bouquets will need to remain in water.  Read our list of instructions at the top of this page to see if you will need to bring your own vases… certain Flowerman locations handle vases in different ways, so it’s a good idea to double-check.

ANY_CHARACTER_HERE
ANY_CHARACTER_HERE
ANY_CHARACTER_HERE

In addition to bouquets, boutonnieres, and corsages, our DIY brides can choose to make many other floral pieces.  This DIY group is tackling rose centerpieces!

ANY_CHARACTER_HERE
ANY_CHARACTER_HERE
ANY_CHARACTER_HERE
Why not keep your centerpieces easy and affordable?  This bride chose to float pink gerbera daisies in lily bowls and sprinkle a few pink petals around the center of the table.  So cost-effective, yet still very, very lovely!
ANY_CHARACTER_HERE
ANY_CHARACTER_HERE

ANY_CHARACTER_HERE
Some brides like tall centerpieces, such as these pieces made from Israeli ruscus, large white calla lilies, and curly willow.
ANY_CHARACTER_HERE
ANY_CHARACTER_HERE
ANY_CHARACTER_HERE

The blue rocks in the bottom of these Pilsner vases really make the vase look amazing!  The Flowerman has these tall Pilsner vases available to rent, by the way, which is what this DIY group did for their wedding.

ANY_CHARACTER_HERE
ANY_CHARACTER_HERE
ANY_CHARACTER_HERE
Have something a little shorter in mind?  Why not make beautiful compact rose centerpieces and surround them with candles and votives!

ANY_CHARACTER_HERE
ANY_CHARACTER_HERE
ANY_CHARACTER_HERE
This centerpiece has a bit of rustic European flair… the aged-looking urn really does a lot for this piece, while the yellow solidago and random pieces of tree fern bring a bit of whimsy to the lilies.
ANY_CHARACTER_HERE
ANY_CHARACTER_HERE
ANY_CHARACTER_HERE
Get creative!  Be sure to enjoy yourself and have fun!  A few fun changes or a bit of creative genius midstream can make the end result even better!  If you think your arrangement might need a bit of grass, go ahead and add it!  If your bouquets are missing a few berries, just buy a few more stems and stick them in!  The Flowerman keeps a wide variety of extra flowers and product on hand at all times, just in case our brides want to buy something extra or get a bit creative.  You won’t get that out of a company that just ships you flowers in a box!
ANY_CHARACTER_HERE
ANY_CHARACTER_HERE
ANY_CHARACTER_HERE
Why not create centerpieces that are all similar and small… and then let your guests take them home at the end of the night as favors!?!  :)

Making your own flowers is so EXCITING!  ;)

ANY_CHARACTER_HERE
ANY_CHARACTER_HERE
ANY_CHARACTER_HERE

Or perhaps use the extras to create a small “throw away” bouquet for the bouquet toss?!

ANY_CHARACTER_HERE
ANY_CHARACTER_HERE
ANY_CHARACTER_HERE
Don’t forget about your cake!  This bride made her own cake topper (you can buy the cake topper pieces from The Flowerman with your order) out of ivory spray roses and hot pink ribbon.  Be sure to let your cake company know that you will be using fresh flowers, and they will be sure to construct your cake accordingly.
ANY_CHARACTER_HERE
ANY_CHARACTER_HERE
ANY_CHARACTER_HERE

At the end of your construction party, after everything has been made, our DIY coaches will help you box everything up and label it noticeably.  That’s it!  Your flowers are now ready to be moved in to the cooler, where they will wait for you and keep fresh until someone comes to pick them up on the day of your wedding!  Congrats!  :)
